Just so you know, I’m writing this entry Sunday night because I’m not sure if I’ll have time tomorrow to write. So I thought rather than deprive you of my witticisms, I’d take some free time and compose my thoughts.
Faithful readers will realize that tomorrow, I start my new job as Process/Project Engineer with a new company. I expect that for much of tomorrow, I will be filling out forms, meeting new people, and trying to organize my desk.
It’s a fucking miracle that I was unemployed for only a little over a month. I consider myself to be very lucky in that respect. Very lucky. One month unemployed, is hardly the norm in today’s economic climate.
Truth be told, I would have considered myself lucky had I found a new job before my severance runs out in September.
One month. It felt more like a vacation than unemployment. I went to concerts. I slept late. I didn’t collect unemployment. I didn’t need to curb my spending. Very lucky, indeed.
However, with this new job, I find myself having mixed feelings. Although, I am anxious to get back to work, and be productive once again, I do find myself wishing for a few more weeks of slackerdom.
When in my life will I ever have the chance to again live on my own terms, with no responsibilities, with no concerns for money? I felt like I was living my friend Matt’s dream of moving to Mexico and becoming a pirate.
So before I once again hurl myself into the rat race, into the world of the working stiff, I thought it fitting to list some things I will miss about being unemployed.
1. I will definitely miss not setting my alarm clock.
There is something inherently satisfying about waking up to your internal alarm clock, or the chirping of friendly birds, or the intense beeping of the garbage truck. It always startling for me to wake each morning to the sound of a traffic report or to the tones of a heavy metal guitar solo.
2. I will miss TNT’s “Primetime in the Daytime” lineup.
I was just starting to get back into “Law & Order” and “NYPD Blue.”
3. McDonald’s Breakfast
Because I have to be at work so early, it’s difficult to run out to Mickey D’s for the Sausage and Egg McGriddle. Mmm, greasy.
4. Tanning
It seems I have developed a good base for a nice golden tan not seen since my stint during high school and college as a summer lifeguard.
5. Telemarketers
It is ever so much fun to talk to the telemarketer selling aluminum siding for a good twenty minutes before I let it slip that I live in an apartment. I depend on those phone calls to really break up my afternoon.
I guess that’s about all. Since technically, my severance runs out in September, I have the honor of receiving double paychecks for a while.
All my friends keep giving me advice on how to spend it.
Can you say, “42” plasma screen TV?”
Days until I start work: ZERO!!!
PS. I am working diligently on a “Reemployment Mix” CD to share with all of you.
